PROGRAM

Economic justice through agriculture

A Chance for Change Foundation is committed to fighting poverty in Zambia by empowering small-scale farmers through sustainable agricultural methods and wider market access to boost their incomes and livelihoods.

At A Chance for Change Foundation, we are dedicated to fighting poverty by empowering smallholder farmers in Zambia through economic justice initiatives. We focus on creating sustainable, equitable opportunities that allow farmers to not only survive but thrive in an ever-changing agricultural landscape. When we promote high-value agricultural production and improve market access, we aim to increase incomes, improve livelihoods, and drive long-term economic stability in the communities especially in rural areas.

What We Do

Out-Grower Schemes: We partner with local farmers to grow high-value crops such as African Bird’s Eye Chili, ginger, and garlic; agriculture that yields fair and sustainable profits. Through our out-grower schemes, we support farmers in producing these crops, offering them training, access to quality inputs, and reliable markets both local and international where they can sell their harvest at fair prices.

Access to Quality Inputs & Technology: We believe in providing farmers with the right tools for success. Our approach includes supplying high-quality seeds, solar-powered drip irrigation systems, and other necessary farming inputs to ensure consistent, high-yield harvests. Through the introduction of renewable energy solutions like solar irrigation, we not only help farmers access water in regions affected by drought, but we also reduce their dependency on costly and environmentally damaging fossil fuels.

Market Linkages & Fair Trade: In Zambia, one of the greatest challenges smallholder farmers face is access to reliable markets. We help farmers establish market linkages, connecting them to buyers, processors, and exporters who offer fair prices for their produce. Through fostering these connections, we help increase farmers’ earnings and secure fair economic opportunities. We also work to reduce middlemen who often take advantage of farmers, ensuring they receive a greater share of the profits from their hard work.

Capacity Building & Financial Empowerment: Agriculture is not just about growing crops; it’s also about managing them effectively. Through financial literacy and business management training, we empower farmers with the skills they need to make informed decisions about their finances, investments, and agricultural practices. When we equip farmers with the skills to manage their resources better, we help them increase both their productivity and profitability.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices: We are committed to promoting sustainable farming techniques that increase productivity while preserving the environment. Through workshops and field demonstrations, we teach farmers how to implement techniques such as crop rotation, soil health management, and water conservation practices. These sustainable approaches help ensure that farmers’ land remains fertile and productive for generations to come, even in the face of climate change.

Promoting Gender Equality in Agriculture: Our commitment to promoting gender equality in agriculture focuses on creating equal opportunities for all, with particular emphasis on empowering women who are often underrepresented in the sector. We work to enhance women’s access to essential resources and economic opportunities across the agricultural value chain. Through breaking down barriers that limit their potential, we encourage them to actively participate in our out-grower schemes. Additionally, we have set a higher percentage of women’s involvement, fostering inclusivity and sustainable growth.

Why It Matters

In Zambia, where over 60% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood, smallholder farmers face numerous challenges. These include poor access to markets, limited capital, lack of modern farming tools, and the devastating effects of climate change. When we focus on economic justice through agriculture, we are addressing these challenges head-on, promoting long-term growth, and fostering resilient communities.

Through this holistic approach to agricultural development, we don’t just focus on increasing crop yields; we aim to create a cycle of prosperity. Farmers who earn more income can invest in their families’ education, health, and future, breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring a better quality of life for generations to come.
